Outliers: The Story Of Success - Malcolm Gladwell

November 25th, 2008

Malcolm Gladwell has a new book out that investigates the lives of geniuses in a number of fields. It was interesting to read about the work/practice behind talent.

“This idea - that excellence at a complex task requires a critical, minimum level of practice - surfaces again and again in studies of expertise. In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is a magic number for true expertise: 10,000 hours.”

You can read an excerpt of the book, Outliers: The Story Of Success - http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2008/nov/15/malcolm-gladwell-outliers-extract

    Really, really interesting…

the extract (and I would imagine, the book) are completely worth the read.

Does make me wonder how I can not have mastery of somethings that I have done for more than 10,000 hours (parenting, being the most conspicuous)…

I received this on CD for Christmas. I would highly recommend! Particularly fascinating was the chapter on the Kipp Schools. http://www.kipp.org/
